As we all know, Atari is the proud father of the classic games such as Pong, Missile Command, Centipede, Asteroids and hundreds more. Atari even played a big role in making Call of Duty.
Atari was the strongest and wealthiest video game organization up until the Great Depression of Video Games from 1983-1984 (Yes, there was a Great Depression for Video Games, costing the industry over 500 million dollars. Steve Jobs even worked for Atari during its prime (however, Jobs refused to bath or wear shoes, so they forced him to work the night shift). Back in Atari's prime they were really a groundbreaking company in a new industry figuring everything out on their own, and they oftentimes nailed it, consequently raking in the dough.
Ever since this depression however, Atari has been fighting and struggling to regain their prior dominance and wealth, but has never achieved this goal. This depression was, literally, the beginning of the end for Atari.
In the years since the depression we haven't seen too much action coming from Atari, apart from them capitalizing on Urban Outfitters slapping their logo on t-shirts, actually becoming a huge success.
This dwindling success has, unfortunately, caused Atari to just announce that they are filing for bankruptcy, making this a sad, sad day for die hard Atari fans around the world. Atari has affected so many people's lives that in 2011 at least eight babies were named "Atari".
People around the world are mourning the soon to be death of their beloved company Atari. The death of Atari is so much more than simply losing a company; it is the mark of the end of an era.
